Shifting Gears:
Bike andCircuses 2024

Whittier Park

Our first Bike and Circuses was held in June of 2022. See below for event program, photos, and other information.

Ride away with the Circus!

In 2022, Green Kids Inc. proudly presented the first

Bike and Circuses

We invited you to ride, walk or roll your way through a circus of wonders at Whittier Park for an outdoor family-friendly event that celebrates our connection to the Earth.

Featuring a cast of 16 performers, this show took audiences on a journey through nature where they encountered acrobats, dancers, musicians, puppets, poetry, magic and more.

Before and after the show audiences were invited to enjoy our interactive lobby, featuring family activities and a bike & pedestrian safety station.

We choose eco-friendly materials and transportation while crafting the show. Almost all set, costumes and props were discarded or second-hand items, and our travel was on foot, bike or transit as much as possible. We also did a comprehensive waste audit and tracked our minimal vehicle travel (audience, performers, vendors and volunteers) and purchases. This was a first for a Winnipeg production.

Land Acknowledgment

We are on Treaty 1 land, the traditional territory of the Anishinaabeg, the birthplace of the Red River Métis, and the meeting place of the Dakota, Ininíwak, Ithiniwak, Denesułine, Anishininiwak, Inuit, and Nakota.

We acknowledge that our drinking water in the City of Winnipeg is sourced from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation, a community who from 1997 until just months ago lived under a boil water advisory, while Winnipeggers used this resource from their land with little thanks and no reciprocity.

Green Kids is working to educate and inspire future generations of environmentalists, while taking our cues from Indigenous water and land protectors, the original environmentalists on this land.

As we present Bike and Circuses in Whittier and Lagimodière-Gaboury Parks, we are humbled not only by their beauty, but also by their historical significance. Lagimodière-Gaboury Park is the birthplace of Métis leader Louis Riel, founder of Manitoba and leader of the Red River Resistance and the North-West Rebellion. We are grateful to be sharing our production with Winnipeggers in this special place. A portion of the proceeds from Bike and Circuses will be donated to Métis grassroots organisation, Red River Echoes, a collective of Métis people committed to reclaiming their sovereignty, lands, culture, and kinships in Red River and across their Homeland.

As we learn and grow, this Land Acknowledgement will too.
